Music Production Basics

The first thing that you’re going to need is equipment so I’ve made a list of the different equipment you’re going to need.

  1. Audio Interface – This allows you to plug studio quality microphones in to your computer without using the sound card directly. You’d be surprised how much this will effect your sound quality.
  2. Monitors – These help you to hear the recorded sound as clearly as possible. When playing back your recorded track these will help you to hear it better.
  3. Microphones – You’re going to want to get a studio quality condensor microphone. My favorite is the HEIL PR-40 which is top of the line for music production.
  4. MIDI Controller – You’ll want this to manipulate the different types of instruments.
  5. FL Studio -This is the program that you’ll need to actually create the music.

The next thing you’re going to have to do is just create the music, you have your studio set up but now it’s time for your creativity to take over. If you don’t have any formal music production training though I know of quite a few different training programs that we can go over now. If you do decide to take these programs you’ll learn a much deeper music knowledge and you music production career will be much smoother. Most people spend 90% of the time trying to figure out how to use this software on there own without turning to professional help.

You can find great tutorials for music production on Lynda.com. That’s where I turn when I need to learn anything online but more specifically when I need to learn about music production they won’t steer you wrong.

Another place you can look for great music production resources is Amazon.com you’ll be about to find interactive books that will teach you the ins and outs of music production so you’ll be able to learn quickly, and at your own pace.

Well that’s it for today’s article, if you have any questions just let me know!
